Abuja Global Shapers Hosts First Ever AMAC Chairmanship Debate

4 Mar 2019

The Abuja Hub of the Global Shapers Community will host the first-ever Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairmanship debate on Tuesday, March 5, 2019, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nigeria. The debate will provide AMAC chairmanship candidates an opportunity to share their vision for the area council and to take questions from area council residents. The debate is one of the initiatives of the Abuja Global Shapers’ Elections Project, which is designed to increase youth participation in the electoral process in the FCT and contribute to developing a culture of issues based voting among youth.

The Curator of the Abuja Hub, Olajumoke Adekeye indicated that the historic debate is self-financed by the non-profit organisation and powered by the resilience of the youth-led group.

She remarked that: “the platform for debate that the Abuja Global Shapers have created represents our vision for a city run by leaders who are accountable to the people that they serve.”

“We must bring government closer to the people if we are to change the leadership narrative in our city. Area council chairpersons make decisions that directly affect the lives of residents; this is an opportunity to engage them on their intentions and enable residents to make informed decisions about their future.”

A registered non-profit in Nigeria, the Abuja Hub of the Global Shapers Community is made up of exceptionally talented and diverse young Nigerians with leadership potential from various sectors including agriculture, international development, transportation, foreign service, politics, law, innovative technology, fine arts, music, and sports. Since its inception in 2011, the Abuja Hub has executed various social impact projects including the Amana Initiative, which connected 28,000 youth with 2,050 government security officers across 19 northern states in Nigeria through scores of peace and trust building projects.

The Hub’s Employability and Entrepreneurship Programme has reached close to 1,000 young Nigerians with training on preparing job application and business masterclasses. The Hub also hosts the Abuja Dialogue Series and Meet the Leader Series, discussion platforms held with leading experts on topical issues. The Global Shapers Community is an initiative of the World Economic Forum.
